Spinal Decompression in Anchorage and Juneau

What Is Spinal Decompression Therapy?

When we talk about non-surgical decompression of the spine or back decompression as many call it, we’re talking about gently stretching the spine using a spinal decompression table or motorized traction to alleviate pain and deal with bulging, degenerated, or herniated discs. Through repositioning, the pressure is reduced, herniations may retract, and nerves are relieved, restoring proper posture and force to the spine.

What Are the Different Types of Spinal Decompression?

At Better Health Chiropractic we believe in a multi-treatment approach that can incorporate other health providers, as a team. Our decompression treatments involve:

  • The Alaska Back Pain Protocol: We created this unique approach to treating back pain with the help of 6,000+ patients that customizes treatments incorporating chiropractic care, the DRS System, and rehabilitative therapy.
  • DRS System: Introduced to Alaska by Better Health Chiropractic in 2001, this FDA-approved treatment uses a traction device and has shown to be highly effective for roughly nine out of 10 patients.
  • Chiropractic Care: When you see a chiropractor for back traction or spinal traction, it’s about relieving pressure, reducing pain, and restoring balance. Chiropractic care also focuses on nutrition, posture, lifestyle, and mobility as it pertains to your spine and central nervous system.
  • Rehabilitative Therapy and Physical Rehab: Chiropractic decompression is often a part of a more comprehensive rehabilitative therapy and/or physical rehab treatment that empowers your body to help it heal itself.

What Machines or Technology Are Involved?

Beforehand, we’ll take a quick, targeted x-ray to shed light on the specific source(s) of your issue, rather than a full-body x-ray. Then, for lumbar decompression all Better Health Clinics have a modern DRS machine (the DRX9000). We also use the Chattanooga type of cervical traction machine, as well as manual decompression with a chiropractor.

What Health Conditions Does Spinal Decompression Treat?

Back pain and related symptoms, herniated disks, bulging disks, injured/diseased nerve roots, sciatica, degenerated discs, worn spinal joints, and more. If you’re curious whether it’s right for your specific condition, or perhaps a loved one’s condition, feel free to contact one of our friendly staff or speak with one of our chiropractors.

Is the Treatment Painful?

It can be, depending on the nature of your spinal or chiropractic needs. If you’ve been in a serious vehicular accident, you may experience some pain lying perfectly flat and having your spine gently stretched. Others almost fall asleep. That being said, remember we’re talking about non-surgical spinal decompression so there’s none of the pain, discomfort, or recovery time involved with procedures like a laminectomy, diskectomy, or microdiscectomy.

Who Can Undergo Spine Decompression?

  • Inclusion: Basically, any human being with a spine.  People of all ages can give it a shot (especially if they’re insurance covers 20 or so visits which is the ideal amount to repair most injured discs). It really comes down to the chiropractor you choose. Do they adhere to the most updated research on the discipline?
  • Exclusion: Conditions of concern we’ll need to take a closer look at before prescribing spinal decompression are fractures, tumors, advanced osteoporosis, and if you already have metal implants or have undergone any spinal decompression surgeries.

Does Spinal Decompression Work?

This is an exceedingly tough question to answer, as it would be regardless of the type of medicine to which you are referring. What we can say for sure is that Better Health Chiropractic & Physical Rehab has been around since 1998, and in that time we’ve seen decompression therapy provide serious benefits for people from all walks of life, careers, and ages. You can see yourself, check out a handful of our patient reviews.

Any Side Effects?

You mean other than pain relief, feeling better and healthier? Again, we’re focused on non-surgical chiropractic decompression, so there’s really no chance of blood clotting, nerve damage, or infection. Also, no anesthesia is required. Truth be told, disc decompression isn’t always for everyone under the sun. So, if you’re unsure or worried, give us a call and we’ll provide the details pertaining to your specific condition.

What Are the Benefits of Spinal Decompression?

As we age, it’s perfectly natural for a structure as complex as our spines to break down under the constant pressures of posture, gravity, and overall muscular activity. We lose some of that watery cushion between the vertebrae, get injured, work out really hard, play demanding sports, etc. We live! Spinal decompression helps your body restore spinal fluids, relieve pressure, reduce pain, deal with swollen joints, and tightened muscles.

What About Spinal Decompression Surgery?

When you lay down on a chiropractic decompression table in our clinics, there’s no cutting involved. If, however, your condition is serious enough to warrant more than a spinal decompression machine can offer, for example, the removal of osteophytes (bony growths or bone spurs), or vertebra need to be removed, we’ll definitely help you find the provider you need and collaborate after the surgery to help you recover faster with great results!
